Red Sonja is Coming; Rodriguez Not Directing

I’ve waited sometime to post any news about Red Sonja.  Partly becuase I’m not all too interested in the film and partly becuase I couldn’t make heads or tales of what the hell was going on with the production.  So, thanks to the really smart folks over at IGN for interpreting what went on at Comic-Con a few days ago, we’ve got some updates!  Here’s a few important things you should know:

  • Rodriguez isn’t directing, but he is producing.
  • Douglas Aarniokoski is directing, a former Second Unit director for Rodriguez.
  • And Rose McGowan is still Red Sonja.
  • According to IMDB, it’s got a 2010 release date.

What’s more, IGN also has a couple teaser pics that were released at Comic Con featuring McGowan as Red Sonja.

So, are you still looking forward to Red Sonja?

The Best Kevin Smith Movies

To wrap up my favorite films by each of the three filmmakers, we’ll conclude with Kevin Smith’s movies. Let’s begin.

  1. Chasing Amy
  2. His most mature work in my opinion. It’s hard to identify what it is about the movie that makes me love it so much, but if I had to guess it would probably be it’s superbly written dialogue. The storyline is fantastic too, but that seemed to be in the background regarding what really kept my attention. The dialogue was spot on. The scene where Holden suggests that Banky and Alyssa should have a threesome will always be my favorite part. Classic.

  3. Dogma
  4. Another great work by Smith, though not an amazing movie in general. Though, comedies are rarely “amazing.” I liked its humor and Affleck and Damon’s character relationship. And of course the honorable Cardinal Glick. And Buddy Christ. ;)

  5. Clerks
  6. Well, the movie is dialogue. So I can’t say much else about it except that while it is praised a bunch for it (and should be), the originality of the storyline is something that also should be acknowledged.

  7. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
  8. So, probably Smith’s most immature work in my opinion. Which isn’t a bad thing if the filmmaker knows that. Which I’m sure he did when he wrote it. With the abundant use of pop culture references that fit perfectly where Smith places them, those dumb fucks who make parody movies like Meet The Spartans could learn something from this movie. Actually, they should learn what they’re really good at instead, which isn’t making movies and probably isn’t anything at all.

Okay, with the previous two lists I picked five movies for each filmmaker, however I’m only going to pick four this time round. If I were to choose a fifth slot, it would be tied between Mallrats and Clerks 2. Apple’s and oranges in my opinion and I honestly wouldn’t mind watching both at the same time (if that were possible). Therefore I’ll leave that choice up to you.

I’m hopefully seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX this weekend, so I’ll report back next week with all the goods.

Tarantino Meets With Brad Pitt for Inglorious Bastards Role

You see, I know people. And it’s becuase of these people that you know that I know that Quentin is heading to France for a meeting with Brad Pitt to discuss the possibility of him starring in the lead role of Inglorious Bastards. So that’s the rumor anyway and while I hate rumors, I have a total man crush for Brad Pitt so I feel I’m obligated to post this.

Latino Review and Vulture Score Inglorious Bastards Script

Those lucky bastards. Seriously. And from what I’ve ‘barely’ read, the movie is going to be kick ass. Wait, not just kick ass, I mean be an awesome epic kick ass fucking amazing movie and will totally win your heart back for Tarantino after his Death Proof (well, I liked it anyway). I say ‘barely’ read because I’ve come to the point where I think movies are spoiled way to much for the audience by means of five different movie trailers, critic reviews, and other mediums. So, if you like to live on the wild side then go check out what Latino Review and Vulture have to say about the script. From a glance, there doesn’t seem to be many spoilers, but I stick to my philosophy. However, I will say that Tarantino spells ‘Bastard’ as ‘Basterd.’ Crazy, huh?

Vulture says that…

…it is exactly as batshit over-the-top insane as we hoped.

And Latino Review notes…

Killer dialogue, excellent execution, and master craftsmanship by Tarantino.

and

Trust me folks, waiting all these years for Tarantino to be done with INGLORIOUS BASTERDS was worth the wait.

Well, I’m sold.

Porn Star Tera Patrick In Tarantino’s Remake of Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill!?

Uhm, okay. Supposedly Quentin’s remaking the 1965 Russ Meyer film and would love to have this chick as his star.

Somebody told the The New York Times’ Page Six: “Quentin loves her, and she’s a dead ringer for original star Tura Satana”.

She adds, “It would be the hottest remake ever, and I’m honored to be considered. I was built for this part”.

I dunno know if this is really news, but I’m posting it anyway.

Kevin Smith Moderating Q&A With ‘Spaced’ Cast

In case you don’t mind taking a trip to Los Angeles on the 23rd of July, you can see Kevin Smith alongside Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and Edgar Wright. He’ll be moderating a Q&A at the Arclight Hollywood for the newly announced four city tour to promote the DVD release of Spaced: The Complete Series. They will also be hosting 3 episodes of the show at the event.

If you haven’t seen Spaced, I highly suggest you pick up the new DVD when available (or preorder at Amazon). It’s fucking hilarious. But I should point out that I have a bias for British comedy. That shit just makes me laugh. The DVD will feature commentary by Kevin and guess who else, Mr. Quentin Tarantino.

The tour will also be in a few other cities around the U.S. (without Smith as host) so if your a fan of the series, or of say Shaun of the Dead and/or Hot Fuzz this might be up your alley.

The Best Quentin Tarantino Movies

In continuation with my other post The Best Robert Rodriguez Movies, I’ll share with you my list of what I think to be Tarantino’s greatest films.

*Note: I’m not trying to analyze the films, I merely commenting on their genius. Bare with me.

I’ll begin with…

1. Pulp Fiction

What I loved most besides the amazing storyline, editing, and dialogue were the characters. The movie really is ‘perfect’ on a whole lotta levels, but it’s unique and creative characters are what really land it #1 on this list. Some of which ‘made’ the movie for me include Jules, Marsellus, Butch, and even Winston ‘The Wolf’ Wolfe and Jimmie. Word’s barely can describe why the movie is as awesome and cool and great as it just is.

2. Reservoir Dogs

This and Pulp Fiction were in a close race for the top. And really, they should be tied, but every time I watch Reservoir Dogs I have more of a tendency to watch my favorite scenes rather than watch the whole movie. With Pulp Fiction I never really felt like that becuase I was continuously entertained. But hey, that doesn’t really mean shit. The movie is still a masterpiece. Why? The directing, the storyline, and the acting. Thats what makes it great.

3. Kill Bill Vol. 1

I gotta tell you, this was a tough decision. It’s obvious that Vol. 1 has action and Vol. 2 has story and ninety-nine percent of the time I choose story. I guess the reason why Vol. 1 is in front has to do more with the problem I have with Vol. 2 which I’ll get to in a second. The Kill Bill movies, a bit more so in Vol. 1, possess one major thing that so far none of Tarantino’s films have had (or isn’t very apparent). What’s that, you say? EPICNESS. A hot chick dressed in tight clothes armed with a samurai sword chopping nearly 100 other dudes to pieces (literally) with a dash of cool music is really just awesome.

4. Kill Bill Vol. 2

Vol. 2 reminds me of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly where as Vol. 1 is more of the For a Few Dollars More or A Fistful of Dollars-esque. If you haven’t seen those movies, then you really should. Anyway, Vol. 2 is a great film and one that I’m worried may be forgotten for Vol. 1. Like I said, it possesses far more storyline of the two and don’t get me wrong, that’s a good thing. My complaint with it is that I found it to be slightly, well, boring (the movie gods just struck me with lightning). Boring may be the wrong word, but Vol. 1 kicked ass because it kept going and going with you on the edge of your seat. Vol. 2 kicked slightly less ass becuase you actually lied back and watched The Bride try and find Bill for a little while. And while that is also a good thing, it’s something that makes me think maybe the two films would have been better off as one big, long, epic story. Okay, enough rambling…

5. Jackie Brown

Last, but certainly not least, we have Mrs. Jackie Brown. I don’t care what some of you guys think, I liked it. It’s probably the most traditional film made by Tarantino and whether that’s the reason for my liking it I can’t say, but it’s something different made by Quentin. Something that deserves to be on this list (and not becuase I’m running out of options). The films best qualities are it’s storyline and acting. De Niro’s and Forster’s performances are probably why I love the movie so much. Of course, Pam Grier deserves just as much credit.

Those are my favorites. Care to compare?

Rodriguez and McGowan split; Barbella and Red Sonja No More?

I hate reporting “personal life” news. Hell, I hate reading news about anyone’s personal life. So the only reason why I’m mentioning that Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan have apparently split is because it concerns his future films, Barbella and Red Sonja. According to the New York Post, questions arose about McGowan’s ability to bring in enough money for the films.

“Too bad ‘Grindhouse’ didn’t gross $100 million. Then, maybe, ‘Barbarella’ would have gotten the green light,” said one source. “Instead, the moguls were saying, ‘We need a bigger star, a bigger name.’ ” Jessica Alba has been touted as a possible replacement

Now I’m just praying that Robert we’ll skip these movies and move onto Sin City 2, or Machete. I don’t know about you, but those are the movie’s I actually want to see. Right now.

‘The Inglorious Bastards’ (1978) Special Edition DVD

Over at Rotten Tomatoes (link), they mention that a Special Edition DVD of the 1978 Italian film ‘The Inglorious Bastards’ is being released July 29th. The film which Tarantino is kind-of-sort-of basing ‘Inglorious Bastards’ on was directed by Enzo G. Castellari and starred Bo Svenson. They say that Quentin will…

…appear in the DVD extras, hosting a night of Castellari’s films and talking all things Inglorious with the veteran filmmaker.

Neato. I haven’t seen the ‘78 film yet and I most likely won’t before I go see Tarantino’s, I prefer going into movies not knowing the slightest bit concerning storyline and such. Which is why I have a love-hate relationship with movie trailers.
